About Birds

Founded over 70 years ago by James Bird, the organisation is now in its third generation of family ownership. Birds was one of the first to be awarded a BMW franchise back in 1974, with their BMW dealership based in Gerrards Cross, but became independent in the late 80s.

'Birds BMW tuning' quickly made a name for itself and in 1989 were awarded the exclusive U.K contract by Hartge GmbH - the internationally acclaimed tuning company in Saarland, Germany. Birds' reputation grew as their Hartge conversions put them on the map, rivalling Alpina and AC Schnitzer in creating some of the most stunning high-performance road BMWs. You can view editorials dating back to 1975 in the library.

A move to Uxbridge in the early 90s, a great location near Heathrow and a building consisting of over 7,500 sq ft of workshop space and engineering labs, saw Birds grow further and earn a big reputation for technical competence in the BMW community. They are one of the very few BMW tuners who undertake all work 'in house', and are often asked to provide consultative services for many of their apparent competitors. It is not uncommon for Birds to receive BMWs that the BMW dealers and reputable independents cannot fix.

In 2008, Birds moved to a new building less than a mile away and now operate from a larger premises with a beautiful, fully-facilitated workshop. Birds' staff currently averages over 30 years experience in BMW environments, and are capable of carrying out all BMW tuning and maintenance work to the highest standards. Their reputation for competence in the BMW community has grown further, with their recent successful exploits in suspension development and limited-slip differentials largely contributing to them becoming a global brand.
